RICHARD PATON
I’m a professional Wildfire Specialist with over 40 years of experience in the field of wildfire management. I’ve spent time professionally fighting fires across Canada in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Quebec, as well as in the United States and Australia.
I’ve had a passion for firefighting since I was a child, but started my career during college, working for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources in Sudbury during the summers. After two years I moved on to Red Lake, and rose through the ranks from Crew Boss up to Air Attack Officer, then became a full-time Air Attack Officer and FireSmart instructor in Shapleau in 2000. By 2004 I moved to Alberta and began working under the Wildfire branch of the Alberta Government in Fort McMurray as a Wildfire Tech, then in Calgary in 2007 as an Air Attack Officer in charge of FireSmart, prescribed burnings, and hazard reduction burning and ignition. I continued in this role until retiring from my government position in 2025 to start Western Canada Wildfire Services in 2026.
